A New Chapter in SunRail’s Journey
After nearly a decade of service, SunRail is laying the groundwork for its 17th station in Central Florida. This expansion is the cherry on top of their original vision, adding an extra 12.2 miles of track to their current 49-mile stretch from DeBary to Poinciana.
John Tyler, the Secretary for the Florida Department of Transportation District Five, couldn’t hide his excitement. He sees this as a game-changer for Volusia County, serving a dual purpose for folks heading south for work and those interested in the developments around the area. But that’s not all—DeLand is also set to become a destination in its own right.
More Than Just a Station
The new station isn’t just about getting from point A to point B—it’s about connecting communities and opening up opportunities. Local leaders in Volusia County are over the moon about the expansion. They see it as a chance to showcase the natural beauty of West Volusia, from its stunning beaches to its breathtaking springs and trails.
Chris Cloudman, the Mayor of DeLand, put it best: “We’ve always taken pride in the fact that in West Volusia we have such an amazing natural Florida beauty. We have springs, we have trails, and just an opportunity for people to come and see what Florida originally looked like.”
Looking Ahead
While the new station is expected to open next summer, there’s still a lot of work to be done. SunRail plans to enhance the existing tracks between DeBary and DeLand, including adding four miles of double tracking for increased capacity.
There’s also been a big push to get service running on the weekends. While that hasn’t happened yet, it’s always been part of the original plan. As Tyler pointed out, it’s all about funding from both the state and local government partners.
So, as we wait for the new station to open its doors, we can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation. This isn’t just a new station—it’s a new chapter in SunRail’s journey, and we can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
So, buckle up, DeLand. The SunRail is coming, and it’s going to be one heck of a ride!
